Can you hear the boom? 🔊 That’s the mating call of the mysterious matuku/bittern, a large wetland bird more often heard than seen. Our staff, along with Bay of Plenty Regional Council, Fish & Game New Zealand and over 80 volunteers, put on our detective hats to record population estimates of the endangered bittern. This is an essential count to help us evaluate trends, prioritise habitat restoration and determine how to adapt to management. Learn more about the matuku/bittern here: https://bit.

We participated in the @birdlifeoz Bittern Listening Survey. The Australasian Bittern is a wetlands bird that resides in the Hunter Estuary but is sadly under threat. Surveys like this provide valuable information on population, distribution and behavior that can help to save the Bittern. #wetlands #birdwatching #conservation #naturefacts #naturelovers #threatenedspecies 🎵Music: Alone Musician: Mike via VN Editor 📷 Australasian Bittern by Imogen Warren CC SA 4.0 via Wikimedia | Hunter Wetlands

I had a Pāteke disturb monitoring this morning...just popped out of the wetland and waddled on through the ngāhere! Not concerned at all by the human sitting up in the tree a metre or so above it! Pāteke or Brown Teal are 'Nationally increasing' but remain 'Conservation Dependent', meaning the population needs ongoing support to recover and is still vulnerable to threats like predation and habitat loss. Pāteke need wetlands too...when we restore Habitat for Hūrepo we help other wetland dependent

With the right conservation support, a species can bounce back.. At RSPB Middleton Lakes bitterns have successfully raised five young marking the first recorded breeding success of this species in the West Midlands for more than 100 years! New bittern nesting territories have also been established at RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands and RSPB Leighton Moss, while record numbers have been seen at reserves in the south and east of England 🎉 | RSPB

Eight Bitterns booming 📣 Thanks to large scale conservation work - Bitterns are back from the brink. From just 11 booming males in 1997, to over 234 booming males in 2023, Bitterns are booming brilliant! Due to their ‘cryptic’ camouflage and stealth through the reedbeds, Bitterns are considered highly elusive. Counting the number of booming males in the spring is the best way to find out just how many there are. The booming noise which sounds like someone blowing across a milk bottle top is the

Once bittern, twice shy! 🌾 #ConservationWeek is the perfect time to take action for nature! One way to do that is by joining The Great Matuku Muster. Shy and elusive, matuku-hūrepo are classified as nationally critical, with an estimated population of less than 1000 individual birds. The Great Matuku Muster calls on people to visit their local wetlands for up to an hour before sunset, and listen for the “boom” or “whoomp” sound of the male birds. The Great Matuku Muster events are one day each

Happy Monday! 🌞 Check out this American Bittern on the hunt! These elusive marsh birds are masters of camouflage, blending perfectly into the reeds with their streaked brown feathers. Unlike some birds that stand still to fish, American Bitterns actively stalk their prey, moving slowly through wetlands to catch small fish, insects, and amphibians. Known for their distinctive "pumping" call, they’re a fascinating sight for those lucky enough to spot them in action! ❗️3 American Bittern Facts❗️
